为什么孔子和孟子的英文名字不直接用拼音翻译

这个你就有所不知了。对方文化中没有的名词一般都是按音直译过去的。比如jiaozi饺子，kongfu功夫等等。
其实Confucius和Mencius都分别是孔子和孟子的音译，就是直接用拼音翻译的。
英文刚翻译中国文化时，孔子也称为孔夫子，你看，孔夫子和Confucius发音是不是很相似，只不过有点方言味？
翻译孟子时，就比孔子晚些。于是就照抄孔子的翻译方式。因为孟子一般不称为孟夫子，而是称为孟子。于是孟子的英文翻译方法也一样，孟子和Mencius 发音是不是很相似？
西方人接触中国文化时，那时主要是方言。孔夫子的发音是南方发音，是不是Confucius有点南方方言的味道？类似的例子，广州叫canton，现在有时还依然这样叫。
