Soft Puppets

Before the grey of the night’s sky,

Stands a solitary young tree,

Refusing illusory love,

Pondering another world.

—Gu Cheng

Chen Mutian’s recent work continues her explorations into material experience and abstract alienated labour. An eclectic range of colours and materials, from soft fabrics and discarded textiles to diaphanous chiffon and luminous sequins, are weaved together into a patchwork dreamscape, a magical world imbued with the rhetoric and longing of poetry.

Xiao Tingting’s medium might be the soft rice paper and water-based ink of traditional Chinese painting, but her subject is a far cry from the traditional scenes it has historically depicted. Her bold use of intense colour, as well as the forms and moods produced by her terse outlines and muted use of blotting, endow her work with an almost cubist or abstract expressionist character.

The display of items on Chen Mutian’s canvas are arranged over a painted backdrop, channelling the cultural inspiration she has drawn from the ancient Mawangdui archaeological site in Changsha. At the same time, her use of paint and textiles has produced an expressive space that contains her experience of life and growing up as well as her tireless pursuit of the aesthetically intriguing. The result is a kind of foray beyond the past, an attempt to dismantle and reassemble it, which in turn serves to stylistically charge the present.

Similarly, Xiao Tingting often sets about reworking the classics. Building on the traditional paintings that were once the object of her studies, she has incorporated her observations of and reflections on our current situation, paying tribute to the images of old while writing new visual odes rich with meaning. She has thus created an individual and unique language that stands on the cusp between the classical and the contemporary, the East and the alien.

Interestingly, despite the differing styles and media on display in their art, the refined and receptive emotional sensitivity shared by these two artists has resulted in similar images appearing in their work. Throngs of exuberant spirits, painted masks of joy, absurd beasts and adventuring puppets, either humming to themselves or singing in chorus, face a communal today and an unknown tomorrow with that lust for freedom we often see in the dance of wind.
