n. 指挥官，长官；海军中校；英国高级警官
指令长（Commander），是载人航天飞行器中的专用称呼，包括航天飞机、宇宙飞船等。指令长负责接收地面指令或向地面传输指令，并对载人航天器中其他成员发出指令，有时兼任驾驶员（Pilot）的工作。其职责类似于航海活动中的船长。
以美国航天飞机的乘务组为例，指令长（ Commander）是一次特定飞行乘员组的领导和负责人。在飞行中负责飞行任务的安排、实施、飞行指挥、通信联络和飞行安全等，有时兼任驾驶员的工作。驾驶员( Pilot)则主要负责监视、操纵和控制航天器的飞行，负责航天器的检测和维修。协助指令长工作。如果指令长无法履行职责，驾驶员有权接替指令长的工作。任务专家( Mission Specialist)则要求受过航天器各系统和载荷操作的全面训练，精通所有飞行任务实施要求及载荷任务的目的、要求及其运行管理。参与飞行任务的计划并负责协调所有载荷实验与航天器之间的相互关系。
