“Critical”和“批判”的比较 对思维的启示

启示常常来自于问题。我所要重点谈的这一点启示，是受这样一个问题的引发才而展开的：将“critical thinking”翻译成“批判性思维”是否合理？
笔者认为，从翻译是否合理的角度来回答，很难说不合理。一方面，“批判性思维”这一词语，早已获得了习惯性和常识性的认同与应用；另一方面，即便“critical”与“批判”之间在内涵上有一些微妙的区分，但这实属两种异质文化的语言间翻译和互鉴时正常且可控的偏差，几乎可以算作翻译的必然现象。以我目前的思考，实在找不到另一个中文词，较“批判”之于“critical”更为契合精准，若勉力为之，则不免造出些不伦不类的组合，既难获得认同，更难融于习惯。
但是，缘于对这个问题的探讨，通过比较“critical”与“批判”在内涵和外延上的差异，对批判性思维及其思维品质的理解，还是有新的启示的。
总的来说，“critical”的基本含义的确是“批判”，但超越“批判”的外延之外更扩充了逻辑思辨和现实考察的意味；它比“批判”的外延更广，更广的那一部分值得关注和研究。
而在内涵上，“critical”和“批判”之间存在着立场和倾向上的细微差异：
中文中的“批判”倾向于一种批驳性的判断。因而“批判性思维”则是一种以质疑为基本态度，以驳论为主要方法，以“先破后立”为主干过程的思维模式。
英文中的“critical”尽管在日常生活中常常用于具有消极意味的语境，但在正式的议论性文字中，则更多地采用中立的立场，要求坚持一种客观的分析和评估（objective analysis and judgement）。因此，在具备或使用“critical thinking”的研究和论述中，其出发点和论说基础一般都包罗了尽量广泛而大量现实案例和样本，而在此基础上进行的逻辑思辨和推断预测才会充分包容各种可能性，禁得住重复推演和现实检验。
正因如此，杜威在“批判性思维”基础上发展出了“反思性思维”的概念，“批判性思维”的概念将思维主体排除在了思维对象之外，而“反思性思维”则将思维主体本身也作为研究客体，这是一种可持续的、系统性的理性研究，在思维之上加入了“元思维”的环节。
在此基础上，我认为“批判性思维”是一种思维模式，而“critical thinking”经由历史上历代学人的丰富和扩充，其内涵在今天已经形成了一种更为完整的思维系统。
上述的比较分析，结合教育学的基本原理，笔者认为，它对思维，尤其是批判性思维的品质的培养，具有着重要的启示和意义。
